If you’re using Google Chrome, consider taking note of what plug-ins you use and need on a daily basis. Having too many plug-ins attempting to run at the same time can cause both security risks and performance issues. Some plug-ins are enabled that aren’t being used and could potentially be compromised to enable a remote exploiter to gain access to your system. Though this is unlikely, it’s important to shield yourself.
In the Content settings window, scroll down and click the Flash section. To unblock Flash in Chrome, enable Ask first (recommended). The option exists to manage certain Flash behavior on specific sites. When you encounter Flash content, Chrome asks you to Click to enable Adobe Flash Player.
How to enable or disable Chrome plugins
Open Chrome’s Plug-ins from the chrome://plugins address or through the menu’s “Settings” item called “Disable individual plug-ins” under “Content settings.” This page lists all the plug-ins Chrome finds and allows for use. Ones currently enabled have a regular white background while disabled items are grey.
Notice the first entry of “Adobe Flash Player” mentions “2 files” after its name. View more details about each plugin with the upper right “Details” link. This will expand every plugin to view information pertaining to the description and location.
Looking at Flash Player, we see the first to be the built-in plugin provided by Chrome while the the other is the one installed by the system, outside of the browser. Chrome has automatically found this dll file and enabled it for us when flash was first installed.
If Chrome is the only browser you use, making Opera and Internet Explorer’s need for Flash nonexistent, consider only enabling the built-in Chrome instance. Disable it at any time by choosing “Disable.”
This is a clear example of Chrome adding and enabling a plugin that isn’t necessarily needed. While you wouldn’t think it’d do any harm, consider the “Adobe Reader” PDF plugin. This has been enabled by default but is indicating it’s an outdated version that requires a critical security update. It gives you the direct link for download but has never notified me in the past. It could potentially be many, many versions old and I won’t be told of this until I manually check this page.
On the same note, “Chrome PDF Viewer” is installed an enabled so I actually don’t even need the Adobe Reader plugin enabled. Take a look around your own plugins page to verify whether these instances are the same for you.
Some plugins just aren’t needed at all. “Facebook Video Calling Plugin” has been installed via Skype Limited, but I don’t use video for Facebook.

A few options are available to stop this plugins use. This first is obvious: Just disable this from running. While this works, it’s quite possible it could accidentally get re-enabled.

Find and remove the installed program with something like IObit Uninstaller. We know this is exactly what we want to uninstall because the version and name is the same as the plugin.

In the event you wanted to use this plugin in the future, and to prevent from having to download the software again, navigate to the location described in Chrome to rename the file to “npFacebookVideoCalling-BACKUP.dll” or simply move it to an identifiable location.

An easy option for only enabling plugins you will for sure need to use is to enable Chrome’s Click to Play feature. Enable plugins on the fly and only for websites you directly specify.
It’s important to take care of the background processes in the browsers you use. We are always quick to enable and allow things to run that we need and want but the same needs to be done for those processes and options that shouldn’t necessarily be enabled and working. If you think a plugin could pose a security concern or performance degradation, strongly consider simply disabling it. The worst that could happen is it will stop working, where you can then understand it’s personal necessity and re-enable it.
